Ecommerce guide: competing to win
Comments: (1) Published August 15th, 2008 in Marketplace, web 2.0Most of my clients are small business owners and while I was always writing for bloggers, I am adding more and more topics for ecommerce site owners. Here are some suggestions that are based on my personal experience as I have great experience in selling online both - tangible products and services.
Keep people in mind. Whatever you are working on now - writing a web content or changing your site’s look, - always think about your potential customers.
Do you absolutely need a shopping cart? No. This question was asked twice this week and I decided to include it in this topic. My advice: unless you have more than 20 products, you don’t need a fancy shopping cart that will cost you hundreds of dollars. And you don’t need a free template that looks like thousand sites as your business will never get its identity. When I first started selling online 5 years ago, I started “testing the waters” on…ebay. That’s right. After I realized that a business had potential to grow, I invested in x-cart and I still prefer x-cart to any other e-carts:
1shoppingcart - the most popular now on the market
zen cart
goecart
prostores
x-cart
Analyze your competitors. This is an ongoing task, which means once you start visiting their sites, keep doing it at least once a week. Choose your three main competitors and sign up on their sites to receive newsletters and promotions from them. Knowledge is power and knowing what your competitors are doing is one of the most important rules. Compare your products, services and prices with what they have and take every advantage possible to win points with your customers.
Sell benefits, not features. I am always saying to my ecommerce clients that most people make buying decisions after they got emotional. Sell benefits of buying a product, and people will be exited to buy it! Words that help conjure feeling are more likely to get a response. Grab your prospective customer’s attention by including the following words:
- stop
- listen
- clearance
- reduce
- almost sold out
- limited time only
- urgent
Assure your customers with guarantees. Our “Why Us” blog’s category has a great example of how we assure our prospective customers that we will deliver what we promised on time: Affordable SEO Services Use “call-to-action” words as a final step
- buy now

Be flexible. Nothing is constant but changes. Find forums for your niche by using this formula:
“your keyword”+forum and join 2-3 the most active forums. Don’t sell anything there. Read, advice and learn. Include your URL into your signature and post something valuable that would make people wondering to click on your signature link to find out more about you.
Experiment and don’t be afraid to fail. The US market is extremely competitive but there is always someone who comes up first on the market with an absolutely new business idea. And this person is THE one. He will be followed by copycats, but they will never have same success. So, don’t be afraid of experimenting…and failing. You can fail 3 times and come up with absolutely amazing business idea the next time.
Look for support from like minded people. Join multiple networks, including local networking like meetup.com, and make connections with people that will be able to understand you when you feel down. I was probably saying it before in my previous posts, but I found it very hard to find support from people that are not in a business. People that have never been by their own will not be able to understand you.
Support your friends. Establish good contact with local business owners, support them and they will support your back. 100% guaranteed. I am always supporting my local business friends. Before buying something off-line I am checking if I can purchase what I am looking for from people that I know. And I am always rewarded for this. One way or another.
